After-School Tutoring & Mentoring

New Beginnings provides children in grades K through 12th with character-education, consistent homework and project completion, field trips and dinner. Tutors with academic drills strengthen mathematics, English/language arts, science, social studies, writing, critical thinking and character development. Report Cards and Progress Reports are monitored each marking period by our staff to strengthen the areas needing improvement. New Beginnings has proudly served over seventeen (17) schools within the Montgomery County School System.

The after-school tutoring and mentoring program is offered on Monday through Thursday from 3:30 p.m. through 5:00 p.m.

Components of the Program

  • Curriculum is built from the Alabama State Content Standards and Common Core Standards to help our children prepare for the ARMT+/ASA, Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE) and End-of-Course tests which cover reading, mathematics, English/language arts, science and/or social studies.
  • Staff members have an on-going relationship with the students and parents, visit the schools, speak with the administration and teachers, and review report cards/progress reports to monitor academic improvement, attendance and student conduct.
  • Mentoring programs provide interaction with positive role models. Mentors generally consist of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension parishioners, Alabama State University (ASU) honor students, ASU student organization members, and community volunteers (e.g., lawyers, doctors, accountants, professors, business professionals, community leaders, etc.) who take an interest in bettering the lives of children.
  • New Beginnings has strategically woven into the curriculum character education, critical thinking, and basic organizational skills.
  • Dinner is served prior to all tutoring/mentoring activities at New Beginnings. In a number of cases, the meal is the only food eaten after the school day ends.
  • Quarterly birthday parties and field trips enrich the children’s social development and cultural experience.
