Education is the great equalizer!
Education is the great equalizer!

What Makes Us Different

Like a number of programs throughout Montgomery County, most, if not all of the families served are African-American, live below the poverty line and are dependent upon the state for financial assistance and food stamp related programs. Additionally, most of the parents, have criminal records, were raised in abusive and violent homes, and/or were raised in homes with parents without high school educations.

New Beginnings is different than other programs throughout Montgomery County due to its holistic approach. In addition to providing after-school tutoring, mentoring and a summer camp (Camp Adventure) to grades Pre-K through 12th, the Center provides: (1) G.E.D. preparation in collaboration with Trenholm Technical College; (2) family wellness, life skills and parenting training; (3) holiday and spring break food baskets and Christmas toy give-aways in collaboration with the Episcopal Church of Ascension, Gateway Baptist Church and Bethel Missionary Baptist Church; (4) hygiene products and emergency care packages; and (5) full well-balanced healthy meals for the children and G.E.D. participants each time they convene. During the summer camp, the children are provided a full well-balanced breakfast and a heavy snack to take home for the evening.

The vast majority of the students receiving after-school tutoring live in Paterson and Tulane Court Housing Communities and attend E.D. Nixon Elementary School. Additionally, a large number of the children serviced have been in the Program since its inception and are now entering middle and/or high school. The majority of the teenagers attend Capital Heights Middle School. Although E.D. Nixon and Capital Heights also offer after-school tutoring programs, the schools do not have late buses. Therefore, the students we service are unable to take advantage of the tutorial programs despite their tremendous need for the services. The closest after-school program is located 2 miles from the Center.
